Lusófona University short wins Best Portuguese Horror Short Film at the 20th MOTELX festival

"A Hora do Chico!" is a short film directed by João Severo and Rafael Sá Carneiro. It won Best Portuguese Horror Short Film at the 20th MOTELX festival.

The award, given to the directors and alumni of Lusófona University, includes a cash prize of five thousand euros, which is the largest for short films in Portugal. The jury, made up of Fernando Vasquez, José Santiago and Sandra Henriques, praised the film’s ambition and maturity. They described it as an unsettling journey through a past that blends into an alternative reality.

Made in 2025 as part of the Bachelor’s Degree in Film and Media Arts, the film tells the story of Chico Valentim. He faces a tough choice: commit a murder live on air or lose his father’s approval.

The film was chosen from ten productions competing at the festival, held in Lisbon from 3 to 13 September. MOTELX is the top national festival for genre cinema and is one of Lisbon’s most important cultural events. It has become a key platform for developing and promoting audiovisual production in Portugal.

The recognition of "A Hora do Chico!" shows the progress of students from the Department of Film and Media Arts. It also highlights the support given by the teaching staff during the process of creating and producing audiovisual work.
