FilmEU and IADT represented at European University Alliances conference in Dublin
Manuel José Damásio (Lusófona University), Barry Dignam, David Smith, and Rónán Ó Muirthile (IADT) represented FilmEU at the pan-European conference, ‘Towards a Stronger Europe: Franco-German-Irish Perspectives on the Future of European University Alliances’ held in Dublin on May 27.
Hosted by the French and German Embassies in Ireland, with the support of the Irish Universities Association (IUA) and the Technological Universities Association (TUA), the event provided a platform to advance strategic dialogue and showcase best practices among higher education institutions engaged in the European Universities Initiative.
European Universities Alliances are integrated inter-university campuses, where students, staff, and researchers can move seamlessly—physically, virtually, or in blended formats—across partner institutions to study, train, teach, conduct research, work, and share services.
Irish Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD commented: "I am delighted to join with Irish and International colleagues today to highlight and celebrate, the work of the European University Alliances.
“These are networks which, by their nature, drive creativity, collaboration, and innovation, strengthening the fabric of higher education across Europe.
"At their heart, they represent the true spirit of the European project: not just economic cooperation, but a shared commitment to peace, understanding, and people.
“Research, innovation, education and skills are central to that project, and as Minister, I will continue to lead and invest in these areas, particularly as we prepare to assume the EU Presidency in 2026.”
President of IADT, David Smith said that "it was a real privilege to take part in the conference and to see such energy and ambition in the room.
“The Minister’s presence and support were not just welcome—they were vital. His words made clear that Ireland is not simply participating in the European University Initiative, but helping to shape its future.”
Barry Dignam, Vice Dean European University / Programme Director, FilmEU at IADT said: "It was a real pleasure to be part of such a considered and well-run event.
“The setting in Europa House added a real sense of occasion, and the conversations throughout the day reflected a shared commitment to strengthening European collaboration in higher education."
Manuel José Damásio, Coordinator of FilmEU said that what “stood out was not just the shared vision—but the shared commitment.
“The Irish Government’s support underscored Ireland’s serious intent to lead from the front in the European University initiative.
“As Coordinator of FilmEU, I see daily how vital that national backing is for turning ambitious transnational ideas into concrete, transformative actions. Ireland isn’t just a contributor to these alliances—it’s becoming a cornerstone."
In the lead-up to Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2026, the conference explored pivotal questions about the long-term future and sustainability of these Alliances beyond 2027, including how these Alliances can support strategic European priorities such as competitiveness, sovereignty, technological preparedness, etc.
Key elements for these, which were also discussed, include joint degree development, funding strategies, mobility, skills and innovation ecosystems, and the added value for students in engaging in these European University Alliances.
