Dublin International Film Festival 2024 – IADT hosts Screenwriting Panel & IADT Student Films Awarded at First Frame Event

The prestigious Dublin International Film Festival took place between February 22nd and March 2nd 2024. Each year DIFF celebrates the best of contemporary international filmmaking. Once again, IADT student and alumni works were screened alongside the best in global film. https://diff.ie/

The National Film School at IADT had the honor of hosting this year’s DIFF Screenwriting Panel in the NFS studio 1. The event showcased new Irish feature film screenwriting talent and gave the audience a glimpse into the writer’s creative processes.

All panelists’ feature film work was part of this year’s festival programme: Dermot Malone (King Frankie), Joe Lawlor (Baltimore), Marian Quinn (TWIG) and Maurice O’Carroll (Swing Bout). The panel was moderated by Vanessa Gildea, Head of the Department of Film + Media & The National Film School IADT and filmed by a talented team of IADT students. An opera film collaboration between the Royal Irish Academy of Music’s (RIAM) Vocal and Opera Faculty and IADT’s NFS titled DreamCatcher had its global premier at the Lighthouse Cinema as part of DIFF. The 50-minute film came about when the Abbey Theatre performances of Kevin O’Connell and Lily Akerman’s all-female opera were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. DreamCatchr focuses on the relationship of two sisters grappling with the influence of technology and social media as one sister, IT coder Jane, becomes increasingly addicted to developing an application to capture her dreams. Finally, congratulations to current IADT students who were awarded at this year’s First Frame event. Simone James (3rd year Television, IADT) won best Documentary and Best Overall Film for Reflections on a Foregone Self. Keita Prokopcenko (2nd Year Film, IADT) received a Special Mention in Narrative Fiction for Let Me Buy You a Coffee. The DIFF First Frame Initiative event was created to celebrate Irish student filmmaking and featured 38 films.
