IMHerit. Immersive Media Heritage

The Centre of Excellence in Immersive Media Heritage (or IMHerit) is an inter-institutional and interdisciplinary research structure proposed by Lusófona University, LUCA School of Arts and IADT, former members of FilmEU’s Dynamic Cluster pilot Congo VR, to consolidate and foster within the FilmEU cosmos the competencies and expertise developed in historical immersive media, Virtual Reality artistic research and contested/dissonant heritage. IMHerit aligns with current EU agendas and funding programmes that combine heritage with technologies and creative industries to leverage a virtual cultural economy by accessing and reusing digital objects made available on a European cloud for cultural heritage.

By focusing on historical immersive media, IMHerit will explore one of the most unexplored and affordance-rich segments of Europe’s heritage. In addition to anticipating current virtual technologies, historical immersive media are especially relevant today due to their imperialist programmes and contested content, which align with current global issues regarding media-power relationships. This challenging subject requires more profound research and the representation of these media art forms with critical perspectives supported by artistic research and virtual technologies.

During its start-up phase (2025-2027), IMHerit will harbour three pilot projects, a training program and an ambitious dissemination and sustainability plan. The pilots (VISTA, EUROSCOSMOS and NEORAMA) focus on developing digital tools and mediation strategies for working with complex media heritage. Dissemination and sustainability strategies are focused on European cloud heritage networks and EU heritage funding applications.
