FilmEU paper published on Avanca Cinema Journal

The FilmEU "Collaborative International Student Filmmaking – Establishing Joint Filmmaking Practices within FilmEU" paper was published in the Avanca Cinema Journal, a Portuguese online journal. The article was written by Deirdre O’Toole (IADT, Ireland), Tobias Frühmorgen (CICANT, Portugal) and Érica Faleiro Rodrigues (CICANT, Portugal).

This paper documents the process, challenges, aims and objectives of the first pilot project from the FilmEU alliance. The original paper was first presented by Deirdre O’Toole and Érica Faleiro Rodrigues last July at the AVANCA CINEMA International Conference.

The article aims to elucidate a pedagogical pilot project which consisted of a year-long Challenge Module designed for 2nd year Film and Media BA students in the european alliance FilmEU. It presents the first practical implementation of the Samsara pedagogical framework. Students from four different european HEIs worked together to create a mini-series from concept development to postproduction. The project asked students to incorporate and consider a societal challenge in their work and because of this aim, the first challenge topic launched by FilmEU was “Sexuality, Gender and Censorship”. By developing and producing a pilot for a short-form series and other media art projects in collaborative teams drawn from four of the Alliance institutions, the students positioned their stories within a larger international social sphere.
