Maarten Vanvolsem

Maarten Vanvolsem is photographer, lecture in photography, Vice-dean for Education of LUCA School of Arts and is Research Fellow at the Lieven Gevaert Centre for Photography (K.U. Leuven). As a photographer he is intrigued by the relationship between the viewer and the photographic image, and more specific by the experience of time which comes about when dealing with and looking at a photographic image. To influence this experience, Maarten builds his own photographic camera’s. These camera’s are a mixture between a photo- and a cinematic-camera. Among his published works on time and photography are -Motion! On how to deal with the paradox in dance photography. Image [&] Narrative [e-journal], 23 (2008), Slow-Motion (Chi-Sui Wang), exh.cat. Jia-art gallery, Taipei (Taiwan) (2007)- and the books -MOVE:IN:TIME in collaboration with the Concertgebouw Brugge, on the occasion of the International Dance Festival DecemberDance (December 2007) and The Art of Strip Photography, Making Still Images with a Moving Camera within the The Lieven Gevaert Series Volume 11, Leuven University Press, 2011. His artistic and research work was part of several solo- and group-exhibitions in Belgium and abroad (The Netherlands, UK, Germany, Greece, South Korea).
